BERLIN, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- German first division club VfL Bochum sacked coach Marcel Koller on Sunday after their 3-2 home defeat to promoted Mainz last weekend.
The Swiss, who helped Bochum avoid relegation for three straight seasons, became the third coach to lose his job after only six rounds in the Bundesliga.
After Saturday's game, the team, with only four points, is on the 17th place in the 18-member standings.
Dozens of Bochum fans protested Saturday after the loss to Mainz, demanding Koller's dismissal.
"We owe Marcel Koller a lot," said club sports director Thomas Ernst in a statement. "We are in our fourth consecutive year in the top flight under him and that had not happened since our first relegation in 1993. We wish him all the best."
Assistant coach Frank Heinemann would take over as interim coach, with former Bochum star Dariusz Wosz as his assistant, according to the club.
